Join ARCH’s Artists in Residency, Kathryn Zazenski & Khánh H. Lê, along with Hamiltonian Alumnus, Michael Iacovone, for a panel discussion at Hamiltonian Gallery. 

All three artists create work where community involvement is integral and essential to their practice. The panelists will speak about their experiences in engaging communities, the parameters they establish to do so, and why this level of public involvement is important. Join us for the panel discussion on Wednesday, April 27th, 7:00pm.

April 28 : Artist Talk with Michelle Frankfurter at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions 

The Galley at Vivid Solutions & Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW) co-host a gallery talk with photographer Michelle Frankfurter on Thursday, April 28th. Free and open to the public. Vivid Solutions DC Print Lab will be offering tours of lab between 6-7pm.

May 18 : Joshua Yospyn at Vivid Solutions DC Print Lab 

 

“A Crash Course in Portrait Lighting” will be taught by Worn Magazine photographer, Joshua Yospyn, on Wednesday, May 18th from 7-10pm. It’s a hands-on session and attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras. Joshua will be instructing attendees in basic portrait lighting set-ups including strobes and on-camera flash. The workshop is $15.00 per person. Registration and a non-refundable payment are required in advance. Space in the workshop is limited to 10 participants and will sell out quickly!

The art exhibit While Paris Burns celebrates the passion of the city and the fiery heart of La Nuit Blanche. The handmade photo mosaics by Darren Smith take fire as the central element, showing the creative potential of a destructive force.

In recent years, civil rights historians have challenged the traditional narrative that separated the history of black Americans from the rest of the world and depicted the so-called “race question” in the United States as a purely domestic problem. In his lecture, Manfred Berg will take a critical look at the new transnational and global history of the black freedom struggle probing its achievements and limits. Moreover, Berg will consider the impact of global affairs on the African American civil rights movement.

Curated by Gina Marie Lewis, Process: Reaffirmation is an exhibition which focuses on and reaffirms the processes of artists within their studios. This exhibition honors the personal philosophies, practices, and vocabularies of eight artists and attempts to explore a visual dialogue between their works. Ms. Lewis states, "The lack of a specific theme outside of this dialogue is not an oversight. The entire process of this exhibition from submission through selection to mounting the show is an experiment of creation in progress."

The exhibition represents an opportunity for artists to retain power over their work in the context of their own philosophies and interpretations. The artists selected for this exhibition include Anne Bouie, Daniel Brookings, Joel D’Orazio, Victor Ekpuk, Corwin Levi, Barbara Liotta, Adrienne Mills, and Cleve Overton. In some cases, the relationships between their works may be obvious, and other instances invite the viewer to inquire and explore the relationships from their own point of view. As a starting point, such aspects as linear relationships, creation of new processes, innovative use of materials, the making of marks, and defining space were most apparent during the curatorial process.

The New Clear Daze exhibit is an exploration of similarities and differences in the work of four emerging Baltimore visual artists. David Fair, Matt Bovie, Eamon Espey, Andrew Liang focus heavily on color and pattern in their work, yet each has a unique and visceral approach. The media employed by these artists ranges widely, from textile-based to illustration and mixed media to painting.
